Meditation for All Saints Sunday November 1, 2020 ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.’ [Matthew 5:9] I want to share my favorite story of a saint, told by Anthony DeMello in his book Taking Flight. A woman was so godly that even the angels rejoiced at the sight of her. She had no notion that she was holy. She just lived an ordinary life, radiating goodness without trying. Her holiness lay in the fact that she forgot each person’s past and looked at them as they were now, and she looked beyond each person’s appearance to the very center of their being, where they were innocent and blameless and too ignorant to know what they were doing. One day, an angel came to her and said, “I have been sent to you by God. Ask for anything you wish, and it will be given to you. Would you like the gift of healing?” “No”, said the woman, “I’d rather God did the healing himself.” “Would you like to bring sinners back to the path of righteousness?” “No,” she said, “it is not for me to touch human hearts. That is the work of angels.” “Would you like to be such a model of virtue that people will be drawn to imitate you?” “No,” she said, “for that would make me the center of attention.” “What then, do you wish for?” ask the angel. “The grace of God. Having that, I have all I desire,” she said “No, you must ask for some miracle,” said the angel, “or one will be forced on you.” “Well, then I shall ask for this: let good be done through me without my being aware of it.” So it was decreed that the holy woman’s shadow would be endowed with healing properties whenever it fell behind her. So everywhere her shadow fell--provided she had her back to it—the sick were healed, fountains sprang to life, and color returned to the faces of those who were weighed down by life’s sorrow. But the woman knew nothing of this because the attention of people was so centered on the shadow that they forgot about her. And so her wish that good be done through her without calling attention to herself was abundantly fulfilled.[1] On All Saints Sunday we walk in the life-giving shadow of the people whose lives we have shared – who have guided us, listened to us, and recognized our goodness. On All Saints Sunday we remember that we are not alone. We affirm that when we share lives—no matter how brief—those lives are woven into our own—without end. On All Saints’ Sunday we don’t just remember people who are no longer with us-- We honor our ongoing relationship with them. We thank God for allowing us to share in their lives. We promise to walk in their shadows, and to trust that God will use our shadows to bring healing and peace to the world. May our shadows be long and broad. [1] Adapted from Anthony De Mello, Taking Flight (New York: Doubleday, 1988), pp. 110-111. Go, be healing to God's people; seek and share the saving call. Be the touch of Christ for others, be the voice of Christ for all. Lives are broken all around you, and Christ has no hands but yours; hold in them the ones who suffer so Christ's healing love endures. -Martin Willett DAYLIGHTSAVINGS TIME ENDS ON SATURDAY EVENING WE TURN BACK OUR CLOCKS AN HOUR! Meditation for the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost October 25, 2020. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ [Matthew 22:37-40] Sunday’s gospel tells of the religious authorities challenging Jesus to choose between the Law as it is written in the Book of Deuteronomy and as it is written in the Book of Leviticus. Jesus’ response is in line with traditional Rabbinic teaching. Even as he recites the commandments, Jesus reminds the Pharisees--and us—that righteousness---living in right relationship with God—involves more than following the rules. It involves choosing an honest and self-giving relationship with God and with the people God has called to walk with us. And, perhaps the greater challenge for most of us, it involves allowing ourselves to be loved, accepting the love that is the core of being fully alive, as necessary—and as available-- as the air we breathe. How do we love, and allow ourselves to be loved? W. Paul Jones, tells a story that illustrates this point in Teaching the Dead Bird to Sing (Brewster, MA: Paraclete Press, pp. xi-xii). One year when he was living in an apartment in Kansas City, he heard a scratching at the window. He looked out and saw a mourning dove inspecting the window ledge for a spot where she might make a nest. Day by day he saw her build a nest just big enough for one egg, and then to sit on it. One morning he woke up to see the mother feeding her new infant. But often when spring comes early to Kansas City, as it did that year, the temperature plunges suddenly and freezing rain destroys the newly flowering trees. About a week after the baby bird had been born, one of these storms swept through the city. Jones spent a restless night, worried about his 2 tiny friends; when he awoke at about dawn, he was relieved to hear the dove cooing. But when he peaked out the window he saw that the mother bird had propped upright her small infant-bird, frozen. Patiently and insistently, she was trying to teach the dead bird to sing. Jones tells this story to illustrate the insistent faithfulness of God’s love for us-- even when our hearts feel like they are frozen hard. even when we are overcome by the freezing rains that pummel us, that come upon us without notice and seem to take away all that matters to us. God is like that mother bird. God won’t give up on us--even when we give up on God. When we direct our own lives to be loving offerings to God and to our neighbor, we need to ask ourselves if our real purpose is to make ourselves lovable rather than to reveal God’s love. We need to be the mourning dove who never loses sight of the life of her baby bird, but we also need to be the frozen one who allows God to melt our hearts through the kindness and insight of someone else. Go, be healing to God's people; seek and share the saving call. Be the touch of Christ for others, be the voice of Christ for all. Lives are broken all around you, and Christ has no hands but yours; hold in them the ones who suffer so Christ's healing love endures. -Martin Willett Sunday Schedule for the Months of October & November 8-8:30 am Outdoor service of Holy Communion in the parking lot 9 am Morning Prayer on Zoom 9:30 am Zoom Coffee Hour 9:45 am Zoom Sunday School meets: grades pre-K - 5 10am–10:30 am Zoom Sunday School Class: grades pre-K - 5 10:45-11:15 am - Zoom Sunday School Class - grades 6-8 10:30-11:30 am Distribution of Holy Communion to individuals in the church Sunday afternoon - Home Communion for those who cannot come to the church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Meditation for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 18, 2020 I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things. [Isaiah 45:6-7] Anthony Mello tells the story of a wandering teacher who had reached the outskirts of a village and settled down under a tree for the night when a villager came running up to him and said, “The stone! The stone! Give me the precious stone!” “What stone?” asked the teacher. “Last night an angel appeared to me in a dream, “ said the villager, “and told me that if I went to the outskirts of the village at dusk I would find a teacher who would give ma precious stone that would make me rich forever.” The teacher rummaged in his bag and pulled out a stone. “He probably meant this one,” he said, as he handed the stone over to the villager. “I found it on a forest path some days ago. You can certainly have it.” The villager gazed at the stone in wonder. It was a diamond, probably the largest diamond in the whole world, for it was as large as a person’s head. He took the diamond and walked away. All night he tossed about in bed, unable to sleep. Next day at the crack of dawn he woke the teacher and said, “Give me the wealth that makes it possible for you to give this diamond away so easily.”[1] Isaiah promises this “wealth” of the peace that comes from believing that God is the single source of life, in its darkness and its light, in storm and calm. If we trust in the goodness of God, we will be free from the distractions of fear and second-guessing our decisions. Spoken to the King of Persia, these words also warn us that we will be held accountable for overreaching. According to the Gospel of Matthew this is the image of God that Jesus teaches. It is a theology that has been explained well by Bruce C. Birch: Israel's God is defined first and foremost by divine freedom and not by the fate of any particular culture or nation. This conception of the radical freedom of God emerges in opposition to the nationally defined gods of imperial triumphalism in Egypt. The God of covenant is so free that God can choose to enter relationship with a people who are merely a band of slaves with no standing, no power, no influence in the world. This God is defined by freely offered compassion to those who, by the world's definition, are the helpless, the oppressed, and the dispossessed. - Bruce C. Birch, "You Shall Be My People" (Sojourners, May 1984) Yes, God is present in the smallest and least important of persons and circumstances. Yes, our longing for security and our greed begin in our feeling of helplessness. Yes, God’s rule will prevail even beyond the instability in our own nation. Yes, the wealth of the peace we seek is our capacity to trust and to hope. Beyond our understanding you alone are God; you speak to a world of brutal rule and shallow indifference, of arms fairs and reality shows: may the one who came to sit at table with the victimized and excluded disturb our barren peace and call us to another feast where only love may rule; through Jesus Christ, the bridegroom. Amen. -from Prayers for an Inclusive Church [1] Anthony De Mello. The Song of the Bird. New York: Doubleday, 1984., p.. 140-41. Meditation for the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost October 11, 2020 Columbus Day Weekend: Prayers from Indigenous Peoples On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. . . . This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. [Isaiah 25:6, 8] This Sunday we will include prayers from various Native American traditions in both our services. The celebration of the harmonious order of creation in the Native American tradition echoes strikingly the vision of salvation described in Isaiah. This passage from Isaiah is a song of praise to God, creator of the universe, whose peace will prevail over the most destructive forces at work in the world. Prayers in the Native American tradition express the resolve to grow into this harmony and affirm the dynamic balance that is inherent in creation. The essence of human life, in this tradition is what Scripture call “righteousness”: intuitive and trusting alignment with the divine Spirit of life that is the source of beauty and harmony in the tiniest realms of life. The prayers and Scripture on Sunday create a space where we can find our way through the imbalance that we face every day in our political discourse. In this space may we be restored to our true relationship with God so that our decisions may be guided by the Holy Spirit and so that the peace beyond understanding may fill our hearts. O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. I come before you, one of your children. I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise, so that I may know the things you have taught my people, the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength, not to be superior to my brothers and sisters, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy: myself. Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so that when life fades as a fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame. Meditation for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Feast of St. Francis of Assisi October 4, 2020In preparation for Sunday I want to share one of the most famous stories about St. Francis of Assisi. Sunday will be the feast of St. Francis, the day when we traditionally asks God’s blessing on all animals, especially on our pets. Most importantly, we renew our relationship with all living beings and we make the commitment to see the goodness in others. We have been taught to recognize the wolf in sheep’s clothing. In these days, however, it is crucial that we recognize the sheep in wolf’s clothing. St. Francis and the Wolf Perhaps the most famous story of Francis is when he tamed a wolf that was terrorizing the people of Gubbio. While Francis was staying in that town he learned of a wolf so ravenous that it was not only killing and eating animals, but people, too. The people took up arms and went after it, but those who encountered the wolf perished at its sharp teeth. Villagers became afraid to leave the city walls. Francis had pity on the people and decided to go out and meet the wolf. He was desperately warned by the people, but he insisted that God would take care of him. A brave friar and several peasants accompanied Francis outside the city gate. But soon the peasants lost heart and said they would go no farther. Francis and his companion began to walk on. Suddenly the wolf, jaws agape, charged out of the woods at the couple. Francis made the sign of the cross toward it. The power of God caused the wolf to slow down and to close its mouth. Then Francis called out to the creature: “Come to me, Brother Wolf. In the name of Christ, I order you not to hurt anyone.” At that moment the wolf lowered its head and lay down at Francis’ feet, meek as a lamb. “Brother Wolf,” said Francis, “I want to make peace between you and the people of Gubbio. They will harm you no more and you must no longer harm them. All past crimes are to be forgiven.” The wolf showed its assent by moving its body and nodding its head. Then to the absolute surprise of the gathering crowd, Francis asked the wolf to make a pledge. As Francis extended his hand to receive the pledge, the wolf extended its front paw and placed it into the saint’s hand. Then Francis commanded the wolf to follow him into town to make a peace pact with the townspeople. The wolf meekly followed Francis. By the time they got to the town square, everyone was there to witness the miracle. With the wolf at his side, Francis gave the town a sermon on the wondrous and fearful love of God, calling them to repent from all their sins. Then he offered the townspeople peace on behalf of the wolf. The townspeople promised in a loud voice to feed the wolf. Then Francis asked the wolf if he would live in peace under those terms. He bowed his head and twisted his body in a way that convinced everyone he accepted the pact. Then once again the wolf placed its paw in Francis’ hand as a sign of the pact. From that day on the people kept the pact they had made. The wolf lived for two years among the townspeople, going from door to door for food. It hurt no one and no one hurt it. Even the dogs did not bark at it. When the wolf finally died of old age, the people of Gubbio were sad. The wolf’s peaceful ways had been a living symbol of the power and providence of the living God. Most high and glorious God, come and enlighten the darkness of my heart. Give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect love, that everything I do may be in fulfilment of your holy will; through Jesus Christ my Lord. - St. Francis of Assisi Sunday Schedule for the Months of October & November 8-8:30 am Outdoor service of Holy Communion in the parking lot 9 am Morning Prayer on Zoom 9:30 am Zoom Coffee Hour 9:45 am Zoom Sunday School meets 10–10:30 am Zoom Sunday School Class 10:30-11:30am Distribution of Holy Communion in the church Sunday afternoon - Home Communion for those who cannot come to the church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM The 4-legged, finned, & winged members of your family are welcome & we will bless them at the end of the service.
